CARD REVIEW | Last reviewed October 22, 2026
QUICK TAKE
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a mid-tier travel rewards card that pairs flexible Ultimate Rewards points with practical travel benefits for a $95 annual fee. Its strongest case is as a hub for earning and using transferable Chase points, especially alongside eligible no-annual-fee Chase cards.
ANNUAL FEE
$95 per year. The $100 hotel credit can offset part of the fee only if you make an eligible hotel booking through Chase Travel and meet the terms.
REWARDS AND BENEFITS
Earn 5 points per dollar on travel booked through Chase Travel; 3 points on dining, select streaming, online grocery (exclusions apply), gas and EV charging, and eligible vacation-home brands; 2 points on other travel; and 1 point on other purchases. Points may be transferred to participating airline and hotel programs, subject to program rules and changing transfer ratios. The card also offers up to $120 every four years toward a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee, primary rental-car coverage, and other travel protections when eligible. Coverage has exclusions, limits, and qualifying-payment rules.
WHO IT MAY SUIT
Consider it if you want flexible points and use dining and travel categories, can use the hotel credit naturally, and value partner transfers or travel protections. It may work well with eligible Chase Freedom cards: those points can generally be combined under Chase rules, while partner transfers require an eligible premium account.
TRADEOFFS
The $95 fee is ongoing, so estimate the value of benefits you would actually use rather than adding up advertised maximums. Hotel-credit bookings through a travel portal can differ from direct hotel bookings in service, elite benefits, and loyalty earning. Compare cash and award prices before transferring; transfers are generally irreversible. Check the live offer and eligibility rules because welcome bonuses change.
